I am not sober but unfortunately, I simply cannot hang. Maybe it’s celiac, maybe it’s Accutane, or maybe I’m just getting older but pretty much anything past three drinks sends me into a crippling hangover for minimum of 24 hours. Not drinking has gotten a lot more normalized but, I’m sure like many of you, I have the kind of family that will ask me if I’m pregnant if I don’t have a drink in hand at every family gathering.
This brings us to this recipe and a general concept that I love, of creating a batched cocktail base where you can add alcohol to half and keep the other half alcohol free, for those who would want it for any reason! Personally I like to have one drink with alcohol to start the night then do mostly mocktails. This leaves me with a nice buzz and feeling good enough the next day to probably make 8am Saturday yoga.
Mocktails allow people that aren’t drinking to have a delicious refreshing ✨ drink that doesn’t feel like a consolation diet Coke. They feel included and can enjoy the event without prying questions from nosy distant relatives with poor social boundaries. People who want to drink can do so freely without feeling like they’re the only ones boozing. Everyone is happy! This recipe makes about four mocktails and four cocktails. I made them a little bit less strong than traditional margs because I think the tequila can overpower the delicate watermelon flavor a bit, but you can add more tequila if you want.
